Local Specialty Groceries

Specialty grocery stores are similar to normal grocery stores, except they offer special, uncommon types of food items that you might not find elsewhere. A couple of common examples of specialty grocery stores are gourmet food stores and organic or natural grocery stores.

Gourmet food stores cater more to "foodies" - people who enjoy cooking as a pastime rather than a simple method of sustenance. These types of stores offer a variety of high-quality gourmet ingredients for people to experiment with. These ingredients are generally significantly more expensive and hard to find than typical grocery store fare. Well-known gourmet specialty grocery stores may host demonstration events by famous chefs or signings by cookbook authors.

Organic or natural grocery stores sell only food that meets their personal guidelines for being natural. Generally, these consist of foods that are not heavily processed and do not contain things like artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners or preservatives. These stores are the alternative for people who feel that foods carry too many unnecessary chemicals. As you might expect, these goods are also more expensive, but may ultimately be a healthier choice. Some of these stores also refuse to animal byproducts produced under cruel conditions.
