Cuban Cuisine - Ultimate Island Flare

Most people have never been to Cuba and will never go there. This is because of a conflict which happened decades ago and has created an embargo to this day. The politics of the island may have driven off many of the native Cubans, but it has not stopped the delicious food from making the transition to other countries. Luckily, you do not have to travel through these protected borders to get a sample of Cuban cuisine. You can taste all of the different varieties form those who come from Cuba.

The main influences on the cuisine were Caribbean, African and Spanish. The different influences come out in things like fried plantains and other kinds of dishes. These dishes are not spicy like so many of the neighboring islands. They instead use a lot of vinegar as well as different kinds of herbs, onions and garlic to create the cuisine. Rice is also dominant to go along with the many different varieties of black beans, ropa vieja and more. Trying the different kinds of Cuban cuisine will give you an appreciation for the culture.

Get to Know the Sandwich

Many people associate the Cuban sandwich along with Cuban food. It is important to understand that this is a completely American creation. The bread itself is something which was created in America to go along with this tasty sandwich. It was created to bring together a few of the celebrated foods from Cuba. The main ingredient is pork just as in so many of the other dishes which have been created on the island.

Arroz con Pollo

Among the many different dishes that you can try which is purely Cuban, one of the staples is arroz con pollo. This is a peasant dish which was created by those working in the fields needing something that could cook while they were working. They tossed in a chicken along with a few vegetables they might have had on hand and some rice and cooked their lunch. It resembles the Paella from Spain in a lot of ways, only it has fewer vegetables and there is more concentration on the flavor of the chicken. This is a good introduction into this kind of cuisine so that you will be able to try the flavors of the island so that you can see it is delicious.

Carnes con Papas

A great snack type of dish that you can try is carnes con papas. This is a dish which includes meat which is wrapped in potatoes and then deep fried. It generally comes along with a dipping sauce that you can enjoy it with along with the different kinds sides that you can enjoy. Many people enjoy using some vinegar along with these different kinds of fried goods. Having a slaw is a common accompaniment to the papas. These are generally enjoyed more by children than they are by adults, but can be celebrated by all people of all ages.
